Bolting Boards
Our ultimate client, an aircraft manufacturer, identified a need to improve their production process and issued a specification to supply bolting boards, which would show which bolts are required during the assembly of each section. The brief was to produce a sandwich arrangement to fit inside a standard 600 x 400 euro box. This sandwich would consist of a clear protection layer, on top of a printed template showing sizes and details of the bolts required, this would be support by a rigid layer on top of 50mm of foam.
On close inspection it was evident that the materials specified would be too expensive and certain aspects would not be practical to manufacture or give durability. For example white nylon (too expensive) was specified as the rigid layer, with a paper (not durable) template to identify the bolts required.
Rout 1 identified the potential issues with the specification and suggested changes to the materials – working closely with the client we produced a number of samples which were trialled in the assembly area.
The design chosen by the client was ordered in substantial quantities with each board configuration being different depending on the bolts being used that assembly section. At the client the bolting boards are filled in the stores and are used in the various assembly sections, Rout 1 understand that a reduction of both time and waste have realised significant savings within the assembly process.
